Compost

At Sparrow's Nest, we use compost to increase soil microbes and humus content of the soil. We revive the soil so that we may revive plant health.

We use straw, mixed with vegetable wastes both from the garden and from Organic Roots Food Market (an excellent organic whole-foods store in Edmonton). Their entirely organic restaurant generates piles of beautiful vegetable peels, fruit pulp, and coffee grounds, which we turn into black gold for our soil. We mix the straw and plant/vegetable matter through an old manure spreader, leaving a nicely-mixed windrow of fresh materials. Soil microbes do the rest. They consume the raw organic inputs, and the residue left behind is what we call compost.
